Before You Get Your Puppy by Ian DunbarBefore You Get Your Puppy by Dr. Ian Dunbar
FREE eBOOK!  Thinking of adding a new puppy to the family or know of someone who is?  Please read this book first!  The sad fact is that many new puppy owners become frustrated and disillusioned, and dogs end up in shelters, because these owners didn't understand what was required to help that cute, adorable new puppy grow into a behaviorally healthy adult dog. Written by world-renowned animal behaviorist and veterinarian Dr. Ian Dunbar - the man who invented puppy classes and changed the face of dog training forever - Before You Get Your Puppy tells you how to select the right puppy for your family and what to do his first week home to set up your new puppy for success. An absolute "must read."  Click on the book cover to DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE COPY NOW!

The Culture Clash by Jean DonaldsonThe Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
This revolutionary book turns conventional thinking about dogs on its ear.  Originally written in 1996 and newly revised in 2005, The Culture Clash debunks the myth that dogs do things either to please human beings or to spite them. It explores in depth how normal dog behaviors often conflict with the rules of human culture and explains how dogs can be kindly taught to modify their normal inclinations in order to adjust to the human world.

The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat MillerThe Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller
Newly revised 2nd edition! A comprehensive book that covers all aspects of reward-based dog training. Pat Miller, CPDT, CDBC, and past president of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, writes in a straight-forward style that first-time dog owners will appreciate.  The book is well-organized and illustrated with black and white photographs, and contains a wealth of useful information. Highly recommended.

After You Get Your Puppy by Ian DunbarAfter You Get Your Puppy by Dr. Ian Dunbar
This is the companion book to Before You Get Your Puppy, and explains the developmental deadlines that must be met before a puppy is 5 months old to help ensure that he will grow up to be a safe and reliable family member.  Topics covered include socializing puppies to people, places, things, and other animals.  This invaluable book is required reading for anyone with a new puppy in the home!

Sirius Puppy DVD by Ian DunbarSirius Puppy Training DVD by Dr. Ian Dunbar
This 90-minute video was produced by master dog behaviorist Dr. Ian Dunbar, who invented early puppy training 25 years ago when he couldn't find a training class anywhere that would accept his Malamute puppy before 6 months of age.  This was the first puppy training video ever made, and it's still the best.  It is easy to follow and covers the important information people need in order to start a new puppy on the right track.

Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen PryorDon't Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training
by Karen Pryor
This classic book is not a training manual in the usual sense, but we think it's the best and clearest explanation in print about how the principles and power of Operant Conditioning (think B.F. Skinner) are the driving force behind how animals really do learn what they learn. Written by legendary clicker trainer Karen Pryor, who acquired her skills while working with dolphins, this book tells you everything you need to know about how reinforcement training can be used to positively influence the behavior of every member of your household - including your children and your spouse, as well as your pets!

How to Teach a New Dog Old TricksHow To Teach A New Dog Old Tricks by Dr. Ian Dunbar
This is the classic text on lure/reward training. It looks at the training process through the dog's point of view and emphasizes natural, dog-friendly motivational methods using toys, treats, and fun activities as training rewards. Authored by the veterinarian and behaviorist who popularized reward-based training over 25 years ago, it's a perennial favorite on the "top ten" book list of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

The Other End of the Leash by Dr. Patricia McConnellThe Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs
by Dr. Patricia McConnell
This unique book is written by Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and well-known dog trainer Dr. Patricia McConnell, host of public radio's popular call-in program "Calling All Pets."  A trained zoologist, Dr. McConnell gives us a fascinating look at how the behavior - or misbehavior - of the human in the dog-human relationship affects the harmony of that relationship.  She offers very helpful insights for enhancing interactions between people and their pets and it contains some wonderful photographs of dogs and their people in action.

Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne ClothierBones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs
by Suzanne Clothier
If you're interested in connecting with your dog in a deeper, more spiritual way, this is the book to read. Suzanne Clothier is not only a gifted trainer; she seems to have an uncommon ability to see into a dog's soul.  At the end of a day, when you're ready to just cuddle up and relax with your dog, sit on the sofa together and enjoy this book.  We believe that doing so will help remind you why you wanted to share your life with a dog in the first place.  A very special book.

Excel-erated Learning by Dr. Pamela ReidExcel-erated Learning: Explaining how dogs learn and how best to teach them
by Dr. Pamela Reid
This is the science behind how dogs learn.  Used as a textbook in the best positive-reinforcement dog training programs for trainers in the world, this is the definitive text on psychological Learning Theory as it applies to dogs.  The writing style is fun and interesting, and real-life examples are used to illustrate important points.  But it delves deeply into the waters of Classical Conditioning (Ivan Pavlov) and Operant Conditioning (B.F. Skinner) and might prove to be too technical or give more information than the typical dog owner wants to know.  Nevertheless, if you want to understand every last detail about why and how we teach what we do here at Every Dog Can, this is the book to read.  (Alternatively, you can reap the benefits of the knowledge contained in this book by allowing us to simply teach you the methods so you can just use them without having to know the scientific details of why they work!)
